Hola chicos,
Most of the new material will be posted in Microsoft Teams and VHL. You can access Teams through your district email account. Assignments will be posted there under "Assignments", you will have "Pruebas" in the "Assignments" section too, and under "Files" you will find the materials you need to complete these assignments. All work is due on Fridays unless otherwise specified. Please access the Powerpoint with audio that I created explaining online learning for our class and the assignments for this week. The powerpoint can be found under "Files" "5.0" in Microsoft Teams and on the calendar section of my website. As always, please let me know if you have any questions or concerns. Cuídense, Profe

Dear Families,
As we face a number of questions and uncertainties regarding our day-to-day lives, I wanted to reach out and provide you with some learning opportunities. As a World Language Department, we realize that one of the biggest obstacles in learning a new language is the amount of time we have being exposed to the language. We try our best throughout the school year to use the model put forth by ACTFL (American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages) of maintaining 90% usage of the target language in the classroom. However, the problem from here is that once a student leaves our classroom, they are no longer required to hear, see or use the language in any other way. Which is why we encourage our students to do homework, study and review, and use any means necessary to connect to the content on their own outside of class time. We are in an unprecedented moment in time, where we will not have access to our students for the next six weeks. Which leaves all of us concerned for the productivity and the connection that we have worked so hard to achieve. Because of this, the World Language Department has tried to come together to compile a list of resources beyond our current text series that will allow our student to connect to the language in their own way and will hopefully allow each individual an opportunity to maintain the connections that they have worked so hard to establish. We have a number of different approaches that anyone can take to maintain and personalize their connection. I have the various ideas linked below for you with a short description of each of them. 1. www.vhlcentral.com – this is our online textbook, and there are multiple different activities for listening, reading and writing. There are also numerous tutorials and resources that can be used to reconnect and help solidify understanding to previous content. We would like to emphasize that we do not want your student working beyond the current concepts we have been working on since we do not know how far we will get in the remainder of this school year and that we will be working on adjusting our curriculum once we know more. 2. www.conjuguemos.com – this is a website with numerous vocabulary and grammar based activities designed for students of multiple different languages. I will be adding students and posting access codes for our class on my website sometime next week. 3. www.quizlet.com – this should be a website that is very familiar to your student since many of us within the WL department have our own sets created to help them study and prepare for the content within our curriculum. However, there are also countless other study sets that are already made and will allow everyone an opportunity to review and practice materials that we have already covered. 4. www.lansberrylanguage.com – this is a website with numerous links to other websites and resources. 5. www.thefablecottage.com – this is a website with a wide variety of fairy tales that have been translated into numerous languages. 6. http://www.amazingeducationalresources.com/ - this is a compilation of resources with all kinds of different styles of activities for all students. 7. Cultural Plunge Activities – these are a series of activities that are designed for you to connect to your target language in a new (and hopefully exciting) way. There are descriptions of each of activity within the document attached. 8. www.ixl.com – This is a website that many of you have seen before in the primary levels of our schools, however, for the Spanish students, they have added some very elementary levels of Spanish that can be used to help them practice. 9. Read news articles about the current state of our environment in Spanish at THIS website. 10. Visit and explore Digital Museums of Hispanic Culture at THIS website. 11. If you enjoy Ted Talks, THIS is a website that essentially offers the same thing, only with the language translated into Spanish. 12. Podcasts – THIS is a website with a number of different podcasts that you can feel to listen to in Spanish. Choose something that sounds interesting to you and something that you’re going to be willing to give your full attention. I hope that you can use some of these resources over the course of the next few weeks to find new and unique ways of continuing to use your target language. If, at any point along the way, you have questions about something that you are seeing or something that you are working on, please do not hesitate to reach out and email me. I hope to see you all in a few weeks and get back on track to finish this school year strong. (click the button for my quizlet. My username is Profewilliamson)
Aquí van las respuestas de sus preguntas:
What does ¨chico¨mean? Chico literally means “boy”, but when I say “chicos” or “chiquillos” in class, I’m saying “you all”. How has speaking Spanish been helpful for you? Spanish has changed my life! I have been able to travel all over the world and meet amazing people and eat amazing food and see amazing things. Spanish has also given me many job opportunities. I did not plan on teaching Spanish in high school. Actually, I wanted to do marine biology or politics. I ended up getting degrees in history thinking I would become a history professor before I ended up doing social work and working here. Spanish has given me incredible communication skills and has opened up opportunities in employment as well as socially. How much homework will this class give? As much as you need. I will not assign additional homework that is graded. You will only have homework if you do not finish your in-class work. However, there will be daily practices that you can access online to support your language learning as needed. Do you think having a binder for Spanish is a good idea? Yes! Especially one that has some notebook paper or a spiral notebook in it. Thoughts on pineapple on pizza. Love it. I love pineapple on everything, especially pizza. Haters can have boring dry pizza with no pineapple, but I am going to eat all the pineapple on a yummy topping stuffed pizza. Will every single thing in this class be in Spanish? Pretty much. Brain science and language experts suggest that the more comprehensible input you can get in a language – meaning words and vocabulary that makes sense in context, the quicker and better you will learn the language. So I will try to give you as much input as possible, meaning almost everything will be in Spanish. Will there be any partner projects? Yes, Lots. Do you have a quizlet account that we can study from? Yes, Profewilliamson. I will link to it on my website. Are you related to Zion Williamson? Not that I am aware of… Are we going to be needing note sheets from Spanish 1? You will not need them, but they could be helpful this first month. For speaking presentations, are you allowed prepared notes? Usually, unless the point of the presentation is your ability to speak without notes. But you will always know in advance and have a lot of time to practice if that is the case. Where are you from? Snoqualmie, WA. Do you allow food in your class? Yes, until someone 1) makes a mess or 2) it becomes a distraction. When did you learn to speak fluent Spanish? When I was 20. I lived in Chile for 6 months and not many people there speak English. About month 4 I realized I was not thinking in English any more or translating in my head before I spoke. Additionally, I was able to talk to friends in large social groups and keep up with jokes etc. My language skills have gone up and down depending on how often I use them, but usually within a week of speaking and being around Spanish again and I’m back up to fluent. Can you go over the speaking in class credits like how speaking 10 in class should be like? (Spanish 2) Yep. In Spanish 2 first quarter you will get 10 points for trying to speak Spanish once a day. Second quarter you will need to speak in Spanish at least 5 times in a week. This means answering questions, conversing in Spanish, and participating in Spanish in class activities. There will be no penalty first semester for speaking English. Second semester you will need to speak Spanish at least 10 times to get those points and points will be taken away for English use. Do I have to be really good at the preterit tense for this class? We will practice the preterit this unit before we begin the Spanish 2 book. So you will get additional practice. That said, our first unit is on Preterit vs Imperfect and so if you struggle with the preterit you will have a harder time with the new material. Will the activities be similar to Spanish 1? Yes, though because you will be learning different material, some activities will be different. Can we choose where we sit? For the first unit in Spanish 2. After that we will have assigned seats. Spanish 1 will get assigned seats sooner. How tall are you? 5’ 10” on a good day. Do you do tutoring or recommend one? I do not tutor, but we will have flex time when I will always be available for one-on-one or small group help. I would give yourself a month or two to see how it goes before worrying about a tutor. Can we play kahoot? Maybe, I tend to use quizlet more… How many units will we be learning? In Spanish 1, 6 units. In Spanish 2, 8 units plus our Spanish 1 review. Welcome to Profe Williamson´s Spanish class! I'm so excited to jump in and learn with you this year. Learning a new language is a skill that takes some time to develop and grow. It can be a frustrating process, but when you start to understand more and be able to communicate, learning a new language can open doors in all areas of your life. To get us started, here are a few videos that give some suggestions for learning languages. |
